Paris Lodron University Salzburg: Curation in the Performing Arts
Application Deadline: 1.12.2016
Post-degree university course at Paris Lodron University Salzburg with modules abroad at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München
This will be the first university course in Europe providing students with in-depth foundations in the theory, methodology and practice of curation in the performing arts. Students will be able to complete the course alongside their professional activities and hence to implement newly-acquired knowledge in practice. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, there has been an explosion of new international festivals and multifunctional venues. Yet, it has thus far not been possible to acquire focused curatorial qualifications for the analysis, conception, planning and carrying out of events in the fields of dance, theatre and music theatre. This two-semester course is aimed at students wishing to study in parallel to their professional activities in the field. Modules abroad will be conducted by the Department of Theatre Studies at the Ludwig-Maximillian-Universität München. Leading international curators will communicate contemporary methods and convey competencies in programme design in the performing arts, preparing participants for the complex conditions of an increasingly interwoven job market across the globe.
The course is aimed at employees and freelancers who wish to acquire an additional curatorial qualification: this might include theatre and cultural managers, dramaturgs and dramaturgical assistants, cultural administrators, theatre and dance pedagogues, artists, cultural journalists and academics – active in fields and institutions such as theatres and festivals, foundations, cultural administrations, universities and higher education. Working language is German, partly English (the very good passive comprehension of German is a prerequisite).
Course Lecturers 2017(selection subject to confirmation)
Christopher Balme (LMU München), Beatrice von Bismarck (Cultures of the Curatorial/Leipzig), Tilmann Broszat (SPIELART/München), Boris Charmatz (Musée de la danse/Rennes), Amelie Deuflhard (Kampnagel/Hamburg) Sigrid Gareis (curator, founding director Tanzquartier Wien), Stefan Hilterhaus (PACT Zollverein/Essen), Angela Glechner (Szene Salzburg), Nicole Haitzinger (University of Salzburg), Veronica Kaup-Hasler (Steirischer Herbst/Graz), Matthias Lilienthal (Münchner Kammerspiele), Florian Malzacher (Impulse Theater Festival/NRW), Gerald Raunig (Zurich University of the Arts)
Course Structure and Modules
The course, designed as an additional qualification for those active in the field, will require attendance at eight two-day weekend blocks (Sat + Sun), each held in either Salzburg or Munich. At the end of the course, participants will realize a curatorial group work open to the public (2017: Szene Salzburg). Participants will graduate with a university certificate and receive – upon successful completion – 40 ECTS points.
